Understand Tie Rod Ends on Your Lincoln

We all expect a smooth and luxurious ride from our Lincoln vehicles and when we don't get that we know that we have to contact our service center here at Gene Messer Lincoln Lubbock to check on the issue. A smooth and straight ride has many components that work for it, and one is tie rod ends. Today, we're going to explain what they do, and how to spot when they might be in need of repair.

What is a tie rod end?

  • A tie rod end is part of the steering components in your vehicle, with an inner and outer end
  • It transmits force from the steering center link or rack gear to the steering knuckle, which causes the vehicle to turn
  • The outer tie rod end connects with an adjusting sleeve, which allows its length to be adjustable, and that adjustment is used to set a vehicle's alignment angle
  • A tie rod end essentially helps keep your vehicle straight when you're driving and turning, as it permits your vehicle to steer

When does my tie rod end need repair?

  • If your front end alignment is off, you might need to have your tie rod ends and other components checked, as worn down tie rods can cause the vehicle to fall out of alignment. You'll know if the vehicle drifts left or right when it is pointed straight, or pulling in one direction
  • If your steering wheel shakes or feels lose, there's a chance that a tie rod end could be wearing out, and begin to vibrate. Be sure to also have your suspension checked, as well
  • If you see uneven or excessive tire wear, that could be because a tie rod end is worn on one side, causing the tire to wear more than others
